Eliane Radigue 30 Years Ago and Now (DRAM/NWR)

In the process of digitising 40 Phill Niblock Experimental Intermedia radio shows from the 1980s, DRAM and NWR are using this opportunity to reconnect with the artists featured and examine how their approach has developed 30 years on.

This hour-long podcast features an early-80s interview with Eliane in which she talks about her “non-event music”, along with audio from a live recording of Adnos III. It also contains an extract from solo-cello piece Naldjorlak (full recording on Shiiin, 2008) and a recent catch-up conversation with clarinetist Carol Robinson and Eliane on her post-ARP work.

Hear three out of print titles on Ubuweb

Avant-garde enthusiasts Ubuweb have made available three essential but sadly out of print works by Eliane, Geelriandre and Arthesis (1972), Adnos I-III (1975-83) and Kyema, Intermediate States (2002).

It’s worth noting that much of Eliane’s work is currently in print, see releases on labels such as Lovely Music, Experimental Intermedia and Important Records.

Prism Escape Interview and Empty Music: L’île Re-Sonante

In the first article, Eliane Radigue gives a lengthy interview to Prism Escape about her music-making process and relationship with the ARP 2500.

Secondly, musician Chuck Johnson’s ‘Empty Music’ uses spectral analysis to reveal more about the structure of one of Eliane’s later ARP works ‘L’île Re-Sonante’ (recording available on Shiiin).

The Morning Concert with Eliane Radigue (KPFA-FM, 1980)

This radio interview and performance from December 1980 is hosted by the Internet Archive.

Eliane tells Charles Amirkhanian about her early experiences of concrete music as a student of Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaefer, and explains the later influence of Tibetan Buddism on her work.

This recording also features the live performance of two landmark works, Chry-ptus (full recording available on Schoolmap) and Triptych (full recording available on Important Records).

Further with…The Disintegration Loops I-IV (MMLXII/2062, 2001-2003)

In the next of our continuing ‘Further with…’ series we consider William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops. This work comprises six unique loops spread over four separately released discs.

Extracts from compositions Basinski had recorded to tape in the 1980s provide the source material for these loops. As they were replayed to be digitised the magnetic tape flaked and corroded to varying degrees, we hear the results.

Through the week we will be posting a series of connected sources, a hypothetical “further listening”(/reading!) list.

As ever, the best way of introduction (or reintroduction) to this work is to hear the series of releases in full yourself. You can buy the releases direct from the artist here. The video above is an extract from a dvd accompanying the series.
